Stan has only a few times made 100% of the boat. When he first started, the
first boats were made for him in Kansas. Then Connecticut, then this guy in
New Jersey. When he could not control the quality of the hulls and decks,
he tried to make them himself.

Making the hulls and decks is not an easy task the way Stan wants them. It
requires lots of space, a skilled glass layup man and lots of knowledgeable
manpower.

He tried making the hulls and decks for several years in Brooklyn, New York
just before he got his present plant at a bankruptcy sale of Tanzer boats.
He could not get the quality he demanded from his own people, so from the late
1980's until around 2004 the hulls and decks of the Rhodes 22 were made by
J-Boats in Rhode Island. That is until they sent him a hull which required a
lot of work to bring it up to his expectations.

Thereafter, he retrieved his molds from J-boats and found that they had
ruined them. So boats made after 2005 were again made by Stan in Edenton with
new, expensive molds. If you visit the plant do not touch the molds for the
hull and deck or Calvin will break your hands.

Stan may have a few more colorful details to add to this story sent to me
from Ed.

>From the Woodenboat Forum:

"On Thursday I tracked down Hank Magierski, builder of about a dozen
fiberglass WoodPussys in the early 70's. While on the phone he mentioned the
"Chappaquiddick 25's" were his. He also built Rhodes 22's and Viking
iceboats before closing his business in 1973. He built boats under the name
"One Design Marine" in Tom's River New Jersey. He told me he owned the A-Cat
"SPY" at one time and also won the Barnegat Bay A-Cat Championship in
"Lotus". Hank had returned from the hospital the previous day, recovering
from quadruple bi-pass surgery. It's a shame these giants of the boat
buiding world are getting on in years and won't have a second act with us.
Who will build these beauties in the future?
Regards,
Tony"

Hadn't realized that Stan wasn't the only Rhodes22 builder.
