Joe,

As Mary Lou and Caesar have noted, the screws allow the tabernacle to
pop off should the mast, ah, get away from you during lowering it.  Add
me to the list of those with that experience.  Replace with a coating of
flexible sealer and seal both screw holes and around the tabernacle and
cabin top edge. - rob

Good point not using bolts on the tabernacle.  

I assume the space under the plywood sandwich was unintended and plan on
filling the whole feature with plywood, glass mat and polyurethane.
