[Rhodes22-list] Ques. about mainsheet

 Chris,

I have seen at least three traveler configurations on older boats which
pre-date the "modern" bar style. One was a length of wire attached
between the aft stay chain plates slightly longer that the transom width,
with a traveling sheave and eye. It formed a moving inverted "V"
---without much adjustment or control that attached to the main sheet
cleat block assembly.

Another (I believe this is the type you have) had two pulleys attached to
the stern corners. This set up was basically like two mini boom vang
set-ups attached from the stern corners to the bottom of the main sheet
cleat block assy. You have to uncleat and slacken one side and draw up on
the other. See attached pic.

The third type is like the ones in Mike's pic. I am not sure how it was
adjusted, but have attached a clearer pic of that style too. I hope this
helps

Todd T.

I have the current setup with traveler bar. I recalled seeing this
  older
setup on the Rhodes22.org web site

  http://www.rhodes22.org/rhodes/pics/CONTINENTAL2.jpg

This lacks a traveler bar but still looks like the traveler lines
  (for lack
of a better word) are attached to the backstays.

Based on the brown vinyl, hair/beard/big glasses on the fellow on the
  left,
I would date this photo to early 80's at the latest.

It's hard to see how a traveler on the after deck would not interfere
  with
  lifting the tiller/shipping the rudder.

My $0.01 (not even worth 2)

I believe I recall that some of those ships used a wire suspended
  from deck
eyes at each end of the transom, each with a small metal block., on
  the wire
rode a block that the main sheet hardware was attached too. The
  blocks at
either end were part of the hardware that positioned the wire
  "traveling"
block that was attached to the main sheet hardware.
