[Rhodes22-list] ladies & gents, start your engines

Hi All,
I wrote in a while ago about my Yamaha 9.9 outboard stalling when I
tried to run at anything higher than an idle. I tried
cleaning out the carb with a strong dose of Sea Foam but it wasn't
enough. I finally bit the bullet and took it to a Yamaha mechanic who
disassembled the carb and found grime and gunk therein.
I asked how I could best avoid this problem in the future. His strong
advice was to run the engine on a regular basis. Apparently, gasoline
turns kind of varnishy and yucky after a time. Even adding an extra
inline fuel filter won't help prevent the gas in the bowl of the carb
from turning. Adding Stabil or Sea Foam helps and should be done also,
but running the engine is the best all round cure. So I'm guessing
about once a month during the winter months when the boat is laid up.
He did strongly recommend adding the fuel/water separating filter which
I'm going to do this weekend.
Hope this helps some of you to avoid the same sort of problem I had.
Joe
