[Rhodes22-list] winter sail

We didn't last sail last winter but did the year before.  We had the opportunity to sail on Christmas Eve and New Years Day.  It was about 60+ degrees.  It was really nice and we had the Christmas music going too.  It wasn't a problem until february when we got clobbered with snow and ice.  I keep hearing from people we are going to get alot of snow and colder weather this winter in Virginia.  In any case we will be taking our Rhodes out soon as it needs some work.    Next winter I am hoping to talk hubby into the parade up at inner harbor.

We were hoping to meet some of you at the boat show.  Unfortunately we ended up not being able to attend.  One of my new kittens ended up with an intestinal issue at the vet that weekend.  The little rascal chewed up hubby's charger wire on his cell phone.

Take care everyone, and to those of you sailing this weekend,  good weather and fair winds.

aka Captain Py

I was out with the wife and our 21yr old autistic boy, Max yesterday
on Rockaway Inlet.  With a nice N/NW breeze we ran south out of Mill
Basin into Rockaway Inlet and the breeze quickly picked up.  I have
a  WINDMATE now and I recorded a fresh breeze of 13 knots of gusts
going to almost NOTHING  within a few minutes!
My main was reefed to my first batten. I have the old type roller
boom and my headsail was out a bit too far, all the way to the upper
stays.  Maybe those breezes were gusting past 13 when I felt them but
I was the only small sailboat out yesterday.   The  fresh breeze
brought the wind chill right now to the uncomfortable level real
quick!  I wanted to keep her in the water all winter and without a
cover I wouldve had to tarp her, but instead I m hauling out on Nov 3.

when was that picture taken with the boat covered in snow?

Lou,

I think that picture was taken the 1st day of March last year.  We
typically don't get snow after February.  Must have had something to do
with global warming.

Lee,
Well, I've got an old style, yank it up by hand lift, but that doesn't stop me from offering suggestions.  How about a few photos so we can ponder the situation? I got a look at the new lift when I was at GBI on Saturday.  This is the web strap that winds up on a roller?  It attaches to the bar that is cockeyed?  Can that strap slid along the lifting bar?  - rob

Rob,

It looks like Alice and I both have similar problems.  The motor lift
bar doesn't travel in the middle of the tracks.  One end of the bar is
almost an inch from the track and the other end of the bar is pushing
hard against the track, bending the end.

Thinking the weight of the outboard wasn't evenly distributed on the
motor mount, I moved my outboard as far as I could toward the lose end
but that didn't help.  Silicon lubrication helps a little, but that's
just treating the symptoms instead of the cause.  The tracks are
installed correctly on the boat so the tops and bottoms are the same
distance apart.  With the weight of the motor and me, the boat heels
towards the bending end, but I can't imagine that would cause the motor
mount to slide to one side.  The motor is too heavy to manually center
the lift during operation.

Any ideas?

Lee

Gary,

That was me and Alice on her boat.  She is a beauty:

http://www.nabble.com/file/p26060894/Picture%2B066.jpg Picture+066.jpg

We were delivering Beats Prozac through Kent Narrows to a marina where
she'll be dry-docked for the winter.  No sailing but with the great
weather
and company it was a most enjoyable day.  We were prepared for a strong
current through the Narrows and weren't disappointed.  While waiting for
the
bridge to open we were lightly motoring into the current yet still going
backwards.  I was glad Alice had a big 9.9 outboard on her boat.

My boat isn't as new or pristine as Alice's, but Stan told me that red
hulls
are faster:

Don't know about rum-fueled yellow hulls.

Lee,
Was that you in Kent Narrows this afternoon about 4 pm across from
Harris
Crab House? Dark blue hull with furled jib and IMF (red covers)?
Beautiful
boat on a great fall day.

Darrell,
I'm about 2.5 hours northwest of you.  Near Roanoke.  Rummy is probably 3.5 hours sw of you at Lake Hartwell.  But you probably want to head due east to Edenton to visit General Boats and Stan.

Rob,

Yes to all questions. I'll be at a conference this week so it might be
the weekend before I can get some pictures.

The strap can slide along the bar but not far due to the alignment of
the winch and the slot that the strap moves through.  However, if the
winch and strap weren't aligned straight it does seem like it might pull
the motor more to one side.  The strap looks like it's centered on the
bar but it might not take much to pull the whole thing off balance.

Thanks--I think.  Can't think of an easy fix if that's the problem.

Lee

Lee,
Well, I've got an old style, yank it up by hand lift, but that doesn't
stop me from offering suggestions.  How about a few photos so we can
ponder the situation? I got a look at the new lift when I was at GBI on
Saturday.  This is the web strap that winds up on a roller?  It attaches
to the bar that is cockeyed?  Can that strap slid along the lifting bar?

My boat isn't as new or pristine as Alice's, but Stan told me that red
hulls
are faster:

I get 3 or 4 years but am sheltered between a couple of sand dunes.  I also
use two tarps, the old one on the bottom and a newer one on top.  I can
get away with holes since they don't usually line up.  I also use plastic
trelliswiork reinforced with pvc tubing to cover the cockpit area to
reinforce
the tarp.

Darrell,
Great boat for Lake Norman. Since you are retiring, the odds of having
others join you for sails, except on weekends and holidays, makes the R22 a
great single handed choice. I go out alone a lot and thoroughly enjoy every
minute of it. Bigger boats can be single handed, but try to remember the joy
of  sailing a fast smaller boat without having to struggle with it. Some
times I  just prefer to be out alone. Loud rock and roll, a cold rum and coke
and me and  ten mph winds. Yeee Hahhh.
Did I mention the French maidens?

How much Mt Gay do you need to imbibe before the French maidens appear?

Yes to all questions. I'll be at a conference this  week so it might be
the weekend before I can get some pictures.

The  strap can slide along the bar but not far due to the alignment of
the winch  and the slot that the strap moves through.  However, if the
winch and  strap weren't aligned straight it does seem like it might pull
the motor  more to one side.  The strap looks like it's centered on the
bar but  it might not take much to pull the whole thing off balance.

Thanks--I  think.  Can't think of an easy fix if that's the  problem.

Well, I've got an old style, yank it up by hand lift, but  that doesn't

ponder the situation? I got a look at the new lift when I  was at GBI on
Saturday.  This is the web strap that winds up on a  roller?  It attaches
to the bar that is cockeyed?  Can that strap  slid along the lifting bar?

Any  ideas?

Lee

We were delivering Beats Prozac through Kent Narrows  to a marina where

weather
and company it was a most enjoyable day.

Lee,
You mention a bar.  While I've not seen the lift, it was my impression that the motor mounts on a slide (vs. a bar) that sits between the tracks?  I would assume the lift strap attaches to the slide?  - rob
