Dear Rhodes List

I am pleased to introduce a new member of the fleet, our new
boat, Dragonfly. I went to Edenton on Friday and brought her home on the
trailer over the weekend. She now rests in the James Creek Marina in
Washington, D.C. All went well. Stan and crew did a test launch, and after
some adjustments--some nuts missing on the centerboard housing--she seems to
be in great shape. The mast-raising gear worked very well. My son and I
added a PowerTiller to the Yamaha 9.9 and then my wife and I took her out
for a couple of hours in the Potomac. I have a lot of checking to see if all
systems are OK, but for now we are very happy with the new Rhodes22. I
should note that she is a radical downsizing for us, since we replaced our
43' Shucker Motorsailer to buy her, but no regrets so far. Stan, Rose, and
crew were great, and so were the staff of General Boats, notable Mark and
the others who helped out. Our thanks to all--I know Stan will get this.

Fair winds, to all,

Frank Tugwell

Chris,
The plywood in our 1991 is on the benches including the step just
below the companionway and the bulkhead separating the main cabin
from the head. The plywood has a paper thin layer that is imitation
wood grain. Because it's not real wood we've always just cleaned it
with any old household cleaner. I don't think there is any cleaning
product that would improve its looks. We did varnish the table (cabin
berth insert) and that looks really good. We just clean that with a
damp cloth with a tiny bit of soap if necessary. Our step is starting
to show a bit of wear. We may look for some sort of non-skid
varnish-like product to put on that. Regular varnish would be too
slippery if it got wet.

We also have teak rails on the galley counter. That's what I'm going
to try to spiff up along with the compression post under the mast.

Not sure about the murphey's.

Frank,

I'll bet you didn't downsize the cockpit by much.

Enjoy and welcome to the fleet.

Frank,

Congratulations! Your marina is about 15 minutes from my office. I'll have
to drop by at lunch and take a look at her.

Happy sailing!

There's a nice photo of a Rhodes22 on Page 9 of the May/June issue of
Good Old Boat magazine courtesy of Dan Snyder. "Pictured is Lady
Grace's last sail of the fall amid the beautiful colors on Lake
Pleasant in New London, New Hampshire."

Here's a link to the web page with the same photo: (scroll down a bit)

And a very nice endorsement along with it. (below)

"I'm always thankful for the Good Old Boat review of the Rhodes 22
(back in 2004, I think) which clinched my search for a small
keelboat. I ordered Lady Grace (right) shortly after reading your
glowing review....what a wonderful boat she's turned out to be! She's
kept on a mooring in front of my house here on Pleasant Lake in New
London, NH. Always sad to put her away for the long winter....the
picture shows her last sail amidst our beautiful fall colors here in
New England.
As your review pointed out, her in mast furling...unique for a 22
footer....perfectly compliments me as a single handed sailor. Our
mountain lake is subject to highly variable and sometimes quite severe
winds. Her sail plan gives me an infinite range of choices to
perfectly match our ever changing sailing conditions. Thank you for
introducing me to the Rhodes 22 and keep up the wonderful work you do
with Good Old Boat. -- Dan Snyder, New London, NH"

Greg:

That's a great photo. I think Stan suggested this might be a good candidate
for a holiday card last year. I liked the image so much that I made a water
color painting and used the painted image to create some Rhodes 22
promotional cards that I handed out to all of the potential owners who
sailed on my demo boat at the 2009 Annapolis Boat show. I still have a
handful of cards left. They are color prints mounted on a piece of hand
tourn water color paper and are about the size of a business card. I would
be happy to mail one to anyone interested while supplies last. Send me a
mailing address to ccowie at cowieassociates.com if you would like one. If I
can find it I will send the original to the boat owner if you send an
address. If I recall, Stan thought the figure in the boat was too large so
the printed cards have a digitally enhanced smaller figure.

Frank:

So you are now officially a member of the fleet. The planning is over and
your new boat is in her slip. It sounds like you went with the 9.9 and
added a power tiller. I have been pleased with my 8 hp and instead of
adding the power tiller I went for the tiller pilot this season. The ST1000
Tiller Pilot was installed last week and I plan to take her out for sea
trials this Friday. I single hand sail most of the time and look forward to
and extra hand at the tiller during those 8-10 hr sails on my weekend
overnight adventures. Did you have stan install an anchor bow roller or do
you plan to add this feature? I remember you mentioning this might be a
nice feature to have exploring the potomac river. Let me know how you like
the James Creek Marina. I drive past your marina as I cross the S Capitol
street bridge on my way to Herrington Harbor in Deale Maryland. I am
getting together with my Dad in Annapolis tomorrow for our six hour lunch
taking his twin screw legacy across the bay to Kentmore for crabs if the
weather cooperates. I hope to get permission from the admiral to go for my
first overnight trip of the season this Friday and Saturday but also need to
keep an eye on the weather. Looks good for Friday buy might be some storm
action Saturday afternoon.

OK, guy - we need proof, why don't you post a picture in the water after one

I'll let Frank answer for himself, but during my visit to Edenton in March,
I did see a boat where Stan was installing an anchor bow roller on a boat.
I assume it was Frank's. Nice boat! - rob

Guys,

I'm in the proocess of renewing a spare IMF mast, now finish-sanded and soon
to be anodized with its boom and spreaders. I have always been concerned
about mildew attack on the internal sail, which is exposed to the elements
year around, especially in the off-season. After a miserable pollen season
am now contemplating dealing with this factor too. Has anyone seen a cover
for our boat or any other comparable sized craft?

I'd appreciate any input.

Art,

Mildew on the internal sail seems like a legitimate concern, but I've
never heard of it happening on a Rhodes or any other boat. As for the
high pollen count this year the nose of my boat has been running pretty
fast and the eyes of the Rhodes have been watering, but the mast hasn't
sneezed once.

Art,
I use a 40 x 20 tarp over the entire boat with the mast on it's
crutch- w lifelines down & tie it to the trailer.

This allows me to go aboard & tinker in my "private clubhouse".

Same here. Plus store the mast with the sail slot down.

Stephen,

I'm thinking about covering the mast when up or down. Your clubhouse has
some of the boomroom perks!

Lee,

If it does sneeze, sailkote should work! I found the sail to my IMF redo
had mildewed on the outer edges, so I may have to replace it.

Cheers,

Art

I haven't written up the account yet, but we went on a 90 mile cruise
through the Gulf ICW over a three-day Easter weekend. The weather gods
being the jokesters that they are, made sure to give us a respectful
helping
of wind and chop. We spent stretches of 2-3 hours each day motoring into
it
with 4hp. It didn't keep us moving at hull speed, but we made steady 5kts.

9 has always been popular on the list, but it's always seemed like overkill
to me.

I have a 4-hp Mariner and it works fine getting in/out of marina and back
across bay when winds fails. Would want something bigger for long distance
cruising.

Artimus,
After twenty two years, Rum Runner has never, ever had mildew on the main
sail. It just doesn't happen.

Guys,

I'm in the proocess of renewing a spare IMF mast, now finish-sanded and
soon to be anodized with its boom and spreaders. I have always been
concerned about mildew attack on the internal sail, which is exposed to the

elements year around, especially in the off-season. After a miserable
pollen
season am now contemplating dealing with this factor too. Has anyone seen
a
cover for our boat or any other comparable sized craft?

I'd appreciate any input.
