I agree with you that a midspan support wouldn't hurt.

You may want to look at using pvc plastic pipe product instead of wood.  It 
is inexpensive, lightweight and fairly strong.  Glue only those joints that 
do not need to be separated for compact storage.  Drill holes through the 
fittings and the pipe and insert fastpins if more than a snug fit is 
desired.
