Ben,
The shroud "guards" that most of us use are 1" (maybe 1.5"?) PVC pipe.  It has to be large enough to pass the shroud and terminating hardware through.  Attached is a photo of Jerry's boat with shroud covers installed.  Mine are a bit longer than Jerry's, but you get the idea.  You can also get little "caps" that you notch that go on top of the guards.  You can also see them in the photo of Jerry's boat.  They do help prevent the sheets from hanging on the shrouds.  - rob

I never considered your strategy of utilizing the furling mechanism during
the tack, but it sounds positively elegant (if we can do it without falling
all over ourselves). Can't wait to try it.  Do you recommend shroud "guards"
or "boots" or "whatchamacallits", and if so what size?
