Eileen,

I agree with others that the R22 is very forgiving and safe for  
beginners. I have sailed my '87 since 2003, she is my first boat and I  
am still very pleased with my purchase decision.

I suggest you pick up a copy of "Sailing for Dummies" by JJ & Peter  
Isler. Please don't be insulted by the name. I bought my copy AFTER  
completing the ASA Bareboat 40 Charter Certification Course. The book  
is very straightforward in it's approach and loaded with practical  
"real world" tips for beginners.
