All,
The author of that book, Peggie Hall, is the go-to for any marine sanitation problems. She (& late husband) was the owner of a company that dealt w/marine sanitation...and they developed a number of biological products for controlling odors that do not involve formaledhyde or any other products that are detrimental to fish & waters.
Peggie is also a very good friend of mine...

Geoff,
Most folks pump out only when their tank is approaching full. With 
proper treatment and a filter in the vent line there shouldn't be any 
odor. There is an entire book written on the subject:
