[Rhodes22-list] Straw Poll Ocean or Lake

Check with your agent if you can get a RIDER to your HOMEOWNERS POLICY (property damage) covering boat and trailer. We did. Some companies underwrite this, others don't. We save 40% doing so as compared with a separate boat & trailer insurance policy.

We insured with Boat/US for decades, and they always paid promptly. Including coming out very soon after Hurricane Ike, taking one look at our smashed boat, declaring it a total loss and sending us the check.

I would suggest that you ask your insurance companies about policies that do
not cover hurricane-related damage. We are fortunate to be able to trailer
our boat and get out of a named storm's way, and I think we could usually
improve our rates quite a bit with non-hurricane coverage. Post-Katrina,
it's the only type of policy that I could get.

  Mike,

Do you use BoatUS? Do you think you would be prevented from Florida of
points south in the winter - perhaps just redefine the locations.
