There is a 4th (at least) New England Rhodes 22. We sail on Cape
Cod, hopefully this season on the three Bays - Cotuit, North, West
Bay - off Osterville, between Falmouth and Hyannis.
	Jon King
Recycled 1990 Rhodes 22 "Sea Otter" (when we get the name onto the
transom).

Hi Lee. I'm considering the following: Com-Pac Eclipse (Hutchins Co.)
and
Precision 21 (Precision Boat Works). Are you familier with these? Geoff

Geoff,

I like the Precision 23 that is popular along the SW coast of FL.
Like the
R22, it has nice cockpit, though deeper and not as wide with a bridge
deck
to the companionway. Pretty much the same shoal keel with integral
centerboard idea.

The P23 is a competitive racer whereas the R22 is a very comfortable,
easy
to sail cruiser with safety a big factor. It all depends on how you
intend
to use the boat.

Geoff,

I'll chime in just to ask a few questions. Much of your decision
will rest on how you will use the boat over the next ten+ years.
Focus on basics, then expand further. Some of our skippers use the
boat strictly for day sailing, where interior room is not as key a
consideration. Both of your alternative boats are very cozy inside,
not such a problem with this sailor. Lee is mostly a day sailor I
believe. In this day-sailing mode the R22 can probably sail more
comfortably with more crew due to a much larger cockpit. A stop for
a meal underway will be more accomodating on the Rhodes because the
galley area with refer, sink, etc. is more suited to its purpose.
Preparing a meal, hot or cold, will be done with ease and with
standing headroom to boot. Just pop the top, easily done. This may
be more the norm in Wisconsin, although we have some weekend cruisers
on the Great Lakes, too.

Now change your hat, a cool shirt and cruise into Mobile, maybe
Fairhope put the pop-top up, cook a nice meal, and plan to bunk for
the night after your sail on the Bay. A comfortable time underway to
the offshore forts and back. You can enjoy a bottle of fine wine,
Thunderbird an excellent choice, without tripping over the cooler
because it is in the icebox instead. Put your top of choice up just
in case you have midnight showers. The ample sink is perfect for
food prep. You will rest comfortable, either v-berth or the
convertable because of the size of the cabin, especially with pop-top
up. This is the cruising mode. Mary Lou and Fred in Rock Hall, just
north of Lee, enjoy more time on the boat, so ask them about
exploring the Chesapeake on their boat.

I myself have voted for the Rhodes for both day-sailing and cruising,
which we do. I would not consider the alternatives a better choice
for us. Just starting out, try to determine what your boating
preferences are, remembering that your use of any boat will change
and expand as you have more experience and confidence.

We'll look forward to meeting up with you all somewhere along the
Miracle Strip, one of the areas I love to sail. Maybe this
perspective can help you with step 1, choosing the boat! It will be
simple.

Geoff,

I started out on a Com=pac 16,and can say that when I owned it 6 years
ago they had great custormer service and very good prices on their
parts.
I've never been on anything in their current line of boats, but they seem
to build a nice boat.If you are always going to trailer, and get the
mastender system,it will have you on the water quicker than setting up
the Rhodes.I don't know anything about the P-21,but I think you will
do a
disservice to yourself if you don't sail the R-22 before you buy
anything. After sailing a R-22 for 5 years,I rented a Catalina-22 for a
couple days in Key Largo this March.I couldn't believe how spoiled The
Rhodes has made me.I'd forgotten what a PITA hanking on the head
sail, uncovering the main sail, messing with halyards, winching down the
centerboard,and something I'd never heard before-centerboard HUM.The
only
time you hear a Rhodes centerboard is when you use it for a depth guage.
There are so many great things about a Rhodes it would take me all
night
to type them out.She heaves-to great, you can even control the speed and
the direction to an extent,by reefing the main and jib.Every sailer that
I've handed the tiller to has remarked about how well it sails.I like to
get her on a tack and slap the hiking stick into the tiller lock and
walk
into the cabin with the pop-top up an take in the view with the boat
sailing herself.
I have to stop typing now and watch the Cavs kick some butt. I will
leave
you with one l
ast thought- The owner of a Rhodes-22 never goes down with his boat,he
just sits on whatever the flotation is holding above the water and waits
for help to come!

Welcome to da list,

Jerry Lowe

Soon after I bought my Rhodes I had new ones made covered in white
Naugahyde
enclosing 4 or 5" foam.... easy to clean, very comfy, look gorgeous
against
the varnished interior wood... just a thought.

Joe,

I have had good results with a product called "marine tex"
available at WM.
On the older rhodes the centerboard is the same size and shape as the
rudder
blade and mine was pretty chewed on when I got my boat. I used the
putty to
rebuild the leading and trailing edges of the centerboard once the stuff
hardened it sanded out pretty easily. 50 or 60 grit paper is a good
choice
for removal of old paint and preparing the surface for the putty. Do the
cracks run down the length of the edge? If so I would use a fine
blade to
try to work some epoxy into the crack to fill it as much as possible. It
dosen't hurt to use some e 2000 barrier coat to seal the area once
you have
it sanded into shape. Then paint to match or just do the whole blade
just
cause. No more than a 2 six pack (worker lube) job max.

Geoff,

We live in Hudson, WI and sail in the St. Croix River. Mary and I grew
up, so to speak, in Lone Rock and Spring Green . Our R22 is a 1987/
2009. She is a beaut.

HI Geoff,

You are looking at 3 very different boats. We've been aboard both the
Eclipse at boat shows and the P21. We used to have a Com-Pac 16. The
Eclipse is basically Com-Pac's replacement for the Com-Pac 19. It's a
bit bigger and has a centerboard. It's a lot smaller than a Rhodes
22. It would be a good daysailer and not a bad overnighter but it has
only sitting headroom in the cabin. I'm still a member of the Com-pac
email list (a yahoo group) and while people occasionally ask about
them, no one there seems to own one. Same deal on the Trailer Sailor
Bulletin Board
(http://bbs.trailersailor.com/forums/trailersailor/index.cgi). If the
Eclipse is like the other Hutchins' boats it is very sturdily built
and the Mast-tendr system would be great if you are going to trailer
and daysail. The P21 is a faster boat but is similar to the Eclipse
in size. It is more lightly built but they are still quality boats.
If you buy a Precision, put latches on the cockpit lockers. We've
known of several Precisions sunk or partially sunk after a knockdown
through downflooding through the cockpit locker which opens directly
into the boat. As someone else mentioned, the P23 is closer to the
R22 in size. Both the Com-Pac and the P21 would be easier to trailer
and set up than the Rhodes but the Rhodes is much more like a small
cruiser than the other two. The standing headroom with the pop-top up
and the full galley with ample storage and built in icebox put it in
another class entirely. The R22 is the only one with positive
flotation. If you are conscientious and put your hatchboard in during
rough weather and lock your lockers, that may not matter too much but
it is a nice feature to have.

When we were looking for a replacement for the 16 we were looking for
a boat for weekend cruising and that would do well in the light air
of the Chesapeake. We also wanted a boat we would be confident could
handle rough weather if we were caught out by a summer thunderstorm.
The R22 won hands down. Seems to me you need to assess your uses and
set your priorities.

Best of luck,
Mary Lou

What size are the shrouds? 3/16"? I recently installed a small flag
on the
rear Port shroud using spring release flag clips but the clips keep
sliding
toward each other. I plan to install a piece of shroud cover cut the
the
length between the clips to keep them from sliding together.

Hey John,
Thanks for the info. There is a crack on the front edge about 4" long
about halfway down, a crack on the back that runs about 1/3 of the
rudder length up, and on the corners at the bottom I almost believe I
can see some wood. That's why I asked about construction. I don't know
how long I need to let the thing set and dry before I try sealing the
cracks. I'm going to start sanding and try to let the dark, damp spots
go away first.
I am not familiar with e 2000. Is that available from WM also?
Thanks,
Joe

Hi Chris,
I believe the stays are 1/8". We have a stainless flagpole that
fastens to the stern rail for our American flag. You can sort of see
it in the picture I posted yesterday.
20100426/9712259f/attachment.jpg
- you may have to piece together this url with cut and paste.)

For our sailing association and other burgees we put a small block on
the starboard spreader and have a very lightweight flag halyard that
runs down to a cleat attached to the aft lower stay.

Are you talking about putting the flag on the back stay or on one of
the aft lower stays? Let us know how the shroud cover idea works out.
Our flag halyard works fine but the burgee eventually batters itself
to death on the stays.

Best,

Cut and paste always has it's problems. Here again (maybe is the URL
with the picture of our flad on the stern rail - maybe).

http://www.rhodes22.org/pipermail/rhodes22-list/attachments/

Anyone wishing to view may still need to cut & paste on your end.

Best,
Mary Lou

Dear Stan,

How would you like to handle your Certificate of Support program when
dealing with an owner who has received a Rhodes by gift or inheritance?

Porter

P.S. Yes, such lucky SOBs do exist.

Joe,
I did the same repair about ten years ago. I let the rudder dry out
inside
my home for several months and then filled and sealed the cracks with
marine bondo (yes, there really is such a thing) and then laid
several layers of
fiberglass and resin over all of the edges. I sanded smooth,
painted and
put new anti-fouling on and it's been good since.
My guess is that the rudder is constructed as two pieces and then
glassed
together. Stan might have another trick up his sleeve, but that's my
guess.

Hey John,
Thanks for the info. There is a crack on the front edge about 4" long
about halfway down, a crack on the back that runs about 1/3 of the
rudder length up, and on the corners at the bottom I almost believe I
can see some wood. That's why I asked about construction. I don't
know
how long I need to let the thing set and dry before I try sealing the
cracks. I'm going to start sanding and try to let the dark, damp spots
go away first.
I am not familiar with e 2000. Is that available from WM also?
Thanks,
Joe
