[Rhodes22-list] Hit by a car, can my rhodes be saved?

Alex,

I'd take the pictures to a credible boatyard for evaluation. John Lock owns my first R22, 1979 vintage, which suffered major damage before it was restored by it's then owner. I sold it to a NC rookie who damaged the keel, then sold it to John, who repaired this damage. While there was a concave flexure I discovered while I owned it, it sailed well and continues to do well now.

Just from a superficial look at the pictures, know that much of the area inside the damaged surface is packed with floatation, which therefore should reinforce a hull repair well. Serious structural damage in the laz area should be very visible from the laz opening, possible using mirrors. Shine auto headlamps on it at night and look for light shining thru. I don't think major trauma to recover if you have a good shop to access. You may even be able to repair part or all yourself.

Remember that it was not perfect when you received it, you have just extended the time for restoration a mite. Keep us posted on your progress!

>This week I was going to start work restoring my rhodes 22, but Saturday at 4:30 AM there arose a problem. My wife and I were awoken to the sound of an explosion, we looked out our window and saw a car driving on our lawn. A man fell asleep at the wheel, and drove his honda civic through our fence, smashing into, then going under our boat on the trailer. The boat was still tightly strapped to the dual-axle trailer with 10k pound straps. He was still going so fast after the collision, he demolished two more fences, throwing the heavy, trex fencing 20 or 30 feet. The hull has three or fours cracks near the transom. I have to get an estimate for repairs, but we recently moved to CT and I don't know any repair shops in the area.
