I agree with you about Slocum's humility, though the annotated version
points out how he sometimes phrased boasting to read as humility.

Slocum's no-hands sailing reminded me of going out with you from Kent Island
and how beautifully At Ease tracked with the tiller "lashed." And that
reminded me of the Starks. (Of course I meant "Trade Winds," not "Gulf
Streams"!)

Jimmy S wanted to make a movie of the trip. Since my father was in motion
pictures, he gave Jimmy lessons before they left and offered suggestions as
J sent cans of film back. J was very unsure of himself, repeated the same
takes again and again, and finally gave up. I remember what seemed like an
hour of a Polynesian wading along with a spear trying to get a fish. But the
mid-Pacific footage was vivid and the way the Starks lashed the wheel and
just let the Vixen sail itself impressed me a lot, since I'd never heard it
was possible (and even standard). 

When they got back J edited what he did shoot and showed it outside one
summer night in my home town. There was a loud soundtrack and lots of
Polynesian dancing. Some neighbors thought he was showing porno movies and
called the police.

Peter,

I'm more of a nonfiction action thriller kind of a reader but I thoroughly
enjoyed Slocum's book.  Talk about humility--he made the impossible seem
like no big deal.

If I tried sailing around the world with my wife I think she would choose
throwing me overboard before divorce; probably before we left the
Chesapeake.

First, thanks to everyone who has written about boat covers. I've got a bug
that's going around here & will reply individually soon.

Second, Lee's nightmare reminds me: I just finished a new, annotated edition
of Joshua Slocum's SAILING ALONE AROUND THE WORLD, a great Winter read if
you don't know it already--or if you do. Slocum was the first guy to do it,
on a boat he largely built himself in the 1890s. Anyway, his boat sailed
itself a great deal of the time, and not just in Gulf Streams. It gave him
plenty of time to sleep, read, cook, write a book, whatever. I just wish his
book was even longer & more detailed.

When I was a teenager we knew a couple--Jimmy & Jean Stark--who sailed
around the world on a 34' yawl (I think). Took three times longer than they
planned. Came back to Connecticut and got divorced.

This really doesn't qualify as a sailing nightmare but it's the first
time it's ever happened to me and definitely got my heart racing.  I
fell asleep on my boat yesterday.  Lack of sleep and alcohol were
contributors, but I had gotten sunscreen in my eyes and had closed them
until the burning went away.  I couldn't have been out for more than a
few minutes but it's surprising how far a slow sailboat can go in that
time.  I certainly learned my lesson:  if you have to sail tired take
plenty of amphetamines, and protecting your boat is more important than
protecting your skin.

It's good to know that this sailing nightmare experience is not unique
to me.

Unsure of my anchoring skill, that was tested by tide and current in
Puget

Sound, I had a fun but restless sleep while over-nighting on the hook
last

summer.  Woke up at 3.00am and noticed the boat was closer to nice
little Tug

that was on a mooring; I went out side and adjusted my rode.  It turned
out that

the shift in position was because of a 3 hour fall in the tide.

Chris could have alerted me to that development, but I guess he was a
little

lethargic by the sumscious dinner we enjoyed together.

Hail Caesar, (bet you get tired of that)

The first year I had recurring dreams about the boat being driven ashore

while sleeping at anchor. Sometimes the dream could end up with the boat
1/4

mi or so from the shore. When sleeping aboard now I always set at least
2

anchors regardless of wind and have a 3rd if I think a storm will blow

through overnight.
