[Rhodes22-list] Motor mount cracks - Alternate Means of Propulsion

All of us should have a an oar (I have a canoe oar) on board for the dreadful
day when we have no motor and no wind. Raise the rudder so it is just below the
water line and use it as a beaver tail to move your craft forward by moving the
tiller from side to side (also raise the center board to eliminate drag). If you
have a second person on board they can assist with propulsion by using the canoe
oar. Kathy and I have had to do this only once but we were sure glad we had the
oar on board. As it turns out my brother was on the dock watching us come in.
I mentioned to him that I could not get the motor started. His response "if you
had not told me that I would have thought that is how you came in every time as
it looked so natural." Another time - I did eventually replace the motor - we
were able to sail in as the wind was favorable when the motor failed.

Ken

I've often wondered if my motor broke would I have enough guts to try to
sail back to my slip.

Late last summer it happened to a friend of mine with a Rainbow24. The
boat is heavier than a Rhodes and although it might have a little less
freeboard, the bow still sits pretty high. He straddled the bow and
rowed himself back to his slip.

I figure if a robust octogenarian can do it I'd at least give it a try.

Ken,
I had cracks in my motor mount and it eventually failed. The mount broke
while I was motoring back to the dock. -- It was an adventure - I
grabbed
the motor and tied it off to the stearn rail but it then pushed up
against
the ruttter and made steering very difficult - I let out some sail and
fortunately the wind was favorable - it pushed me closer to the dock.
Ultimately, I along with my Australian life guard nephew swam/towed the
boat
in to a hoist to save the motor and free the rutter.

I think you should replace the mount.
