[Rhodes22-list] Main Sail Adjustment

Rummy,

A poor example I'm sure, but I promise not to "wine" about spending
money.

I'll admit that the more I sail the less cosmetic maintenance I do but
when it comes to functionality I usually make sure everything is in good
working condition. I've been cramming the mainsail back into the mast
since 2005 but if it starts to wear out I'll probably get around to
doing something about it.

You should see my tiller!

Lee,
What kind of an example are you setting for the newer sailors. Your lack
of
attention to your main sail is a disgrace to this list and the entire
Rhodes22 family. Come on man, get with the program before you destroy
your sail
and then wine about having to spend the money top replace it. I would
prefer to spend the money on rum than a new sail.

Rummy

Chris,

First year I had my boat my sail seemed to do the same thing. Prior to

furling the main back into the mast I raised the end of the boom with
the
topping lift and I think it may have helped. I'm not sure because I no
longer
bother to raise the boom and sometimes the sail gets bunched up and
other
times it doesn't. My philosophy is that if you don't care about a
problem
it ceases to be a problem.

My boat gets launched this week, assuming we don't get too much snow.
I
lowered the mast with the boat on jack stands in the boatyard and
inspected
the mainsail connnection in order to attempt moving the entire main
sail up
the mast a couple of inches so it doesn't bunch up when furled. I
could
see
the screw that secures the line at the top of the main however it looks

like
I would need to remove the entire main, tub etc... in order to make the
adjustment. Single handed and up on jacks with gravel and dirt around
the
boat I decided this is a job better suited when I have helpers and a
clean
open area to work. It seems like the mast with rigging should be
removed
from the boat and placed on a clean ground level surface in order to
manage
removing the main and getting it all back together without bending or
breaking something. I will probably wait until next winter to take it
all
apart and make the adjustment,
