IMF? If you are removing the sails it probably doesn't matter. If it 
is IMF and you are not removing the main, it's probably better to 
store it horizontally with the slot down so that rain doesn't get in there.

Our best storage was back when we had a garage and could suspend the 
mast kitty-corner from the rafters. Now that we no longer have a 
garage, we store the mast (jib removed but main still in the mast 
(IMF) on the boat tied to the stern and bow pulpits with the slot 
down. We also put a tarp over the boat but that goes over a frame 
that is hight than the mast so that no weight rests on the mast.

If you do leave the sail in the mast, you also want to make sure that 
no ties or lines rub up against the Sunbrella part as that is very 
susceptible to abrasion.
