Friends
Last week I passed my 76 Rhodes #39 off to my friend Dan in Maryland. I've
enjoyed all the info and tips that I've gotten from da list in the past 5
years. God speed and good sailing!

all
of your hurricane stories I feel soooo lucky. I think Rummy had the worst
damage
without earthquake or hurricane. Our neighborhood was built in nontidal
wetlands
which is realtor-speak for a swamp. After the swamp was developed some of
the
ancient oaks are now more exposed and when their shallow roots get saturated

it's easy for a good wind to come knock them down. We had lots of big trees
fall
around us but none of them hit our house. Some miniature pines fell at the
marina but only one landed on my baby. The top of one of the pines was
resting
over the cockpit and the boat was covered in needles, branches and sap. The
cockpit drain was clogged and with the weight!
of all the water and the motor, the boat was doing some serious listing. It
looked terrible but after draining and cleaning there was no damage! Here
are a
couple of pictures after most of the clean-up and after moving my boat to

John Lock,

I tried to send the Desolation Sound week 1 journal and I got
the following:

"Message body is too big: 5373308 bytes with a limit of 5120 KB"

The file shows on the email as 4MB but it seems that the list thinks it is
about 1,350 times bigger.

Sorry for the quality of the photos, can't get good detail in 4MB. However
it still should give everyone an idea of how much fun cruising a Rhodes can
be in Desolation Sound. Weeks 2, 3, 4, and 5 to follow as time allows.
Enjoy.

Hi Chris,

Yes, that's very likely the case. Internet e-mail protocols cannot
transmit binary files. So, attachments are encoded in a special way to
turn them into plain ASCII text and then decoded at the other end.
However, the encoding process inflates the file size, so it's very
common for a file to grow 50% to 100% over it's original size for
transmission. That's why you are seeing a difference in the numbers.
Sorry, but it's something I cannot control. Unfortunately there isn't
any way to determine ahead of time what the inflation factor will be
since it depends on the content of the attachment.

Since your file is right on the edge of the limit, I can go ahead and
approve it to go thru. For future attachments, there are several
alternatives to try:

1) Reduce the image size slightly to get the total package under the
size limit.
2) Post the file to Facebook or some other web service and send a link
to the list.
3) Break the pages up in to part 1, part 2, etc. and post them separately.

Cheers!

Chris,

Nicely done and good solace for spoiled Labor Day weather.

Wow Chris! Beautiful!!!

We spent a few days up in that part of the world once - quite some
time ago. We drove all the way up to Lund (starting in Vancouver) so
the ferry and some of the distant waterfalls looked familiar as well
as the ramp/marina at Lund. Of course, we were there in February so
there were fewer boats.

Thanks! Will look forward to the future installments.

Mary Lou
