[Rhodes22-list] Centerboard Cap Seal Help

Hey everybody:

I thought there was no connection between the laz and the cockpit... that's what everybody has been telling me relative to my recent water in the cabin dilemmas.  Which it is: is there a connection or no connection?

Regarding my latest event, where the boat went onto her port side and was swamped:  I believe I may have been the victim of a mini tornado that sucked out my cabin door and flipped the boat sideways.  It buried the mast on the mud (river is only about four feet at the marina).  They had to wrench it out.  A surveyor now believes that the mast and plate are a total loss.  We're gonna get a second opinion on that. Marina mechanic believes he can salvage all.  Has anyone else had similar experience?  Thanks.

>The hose is not usually the problem.  It is the through hull fitting.  The gasket for the fitting on the '83 is probably long gone.  Be careful about tightening the nylon nut on the fitting as it may fracture unexpectedly (very bad if in the water) and it may be attempting to compress the fiberglass hull if there is little or no gasket material remaining.  You will need to haul to replace and rebed the fitting.

>The cockpit drain through hull fitting is usually out of the water when the boat is at anchor due to the shape of the hull.  It generally is pushed dow by weight in the stern (laz contents, batteries, engine or people) or by heavy seas.  The leak may be difficult to observe and water from the laz will usually flow forward, filling the cabin to the same level as the drain.
