Joe,

If u were submerged in salt or brackish water I would walk away if insurance will total it. I had the same exp. w the Carol Lee last year & was sure I could fix it. I really loved the boat & had 2 long sessions sitting in it after refloating it to its mooring. After much contemplation & a good cry, I took the advice of ALL the old timers @ my club & walked away. They are 75 - 80+ years old & have probably forgotten more than I will ever know about boats. Their advice, 100% consensus, was take the money & run. Interestingly, I was able to salvage the IMF mast. With new shrouds & mainsail, after some rehab & field mod to correct a furling jam problem, the main is now furling perfectly.

Note that I sent the last reply in error before it was finished.

My boat, which was flipped over, swamped and mast driven into the mud by a wrathful storm a few weeks ago then forcefully wrenched out by my marina crew, is in the process of rehabilitation. There is a possibility, according to a surveyor, that she's a total loss as a result of damage to the mast and rigging.

However, it would not be 100% "seaworthy" for more challenging situations. But I know that situations on the bay can become "challenging" pretty damned quickly on the bay.

If she's not 100%, and I can get the cost of replacement from the insurance company, I will gladly sacrifice the rest of this sailing season and pick up another recycled boat from Stan. If, on the other hand, all can be fully amended, I'd possibly go with the "fix it" scenario. I will have more details tomorrow after my visit to the marina, but I want to be armed with some of your informed opinions before I go. After all, this is not just any sailboat. Educate me. Thanks.
