Rod and Mary,

The charts shown on the web site you posted are not as detailed as the ones
I used. For example, you want to see where the wing dams are so you can
avoid them. Some of them are only inches below the surface depending on
river level. I used the MN DNR "Mississippi River Guide -- A Guide To
Boating On The Miss. River Between Hastings And the Iowa Border." A hard
copy is free for the asking. That was my main resource and it also lists
points of interest, parks, landings, marinas, navigational tips and much
more.

We put in at Red Wing and traveled to Winona. It was a one-way trip
downstream. It took two vehicles. We trailered to Red Wing and put in at
the Ole Miss Marina. We launched and secured the boat and then drove the
van w/ empty trailer and Camry to the Winona Yacht Club and left it there
and drove the Camry back to Red Wing. Four lazy days going down river,
stopping a lot along the way, (Slippery's Bar and Grill in Wabasha was a
highlight -- we docked there for the night) and took out at Winona, drove
back to Red Wing to pick up the Camry and went home. We motored most of
the way -- even in Lake Pepin since we arrived there on days with
absolutely no wind at all. We did not sleep aboard but stayed in motels,
campsites and cabins along the way including the venerable Anderson Hotel
in Wabasha.

Although we had a terrific time, I must confess that if I did it again I'd
be tempted to take the fishing boat instead for simplicity. And since we
motored most of the way anyway, better sailing can be had elsewhere. But
we sure as hell turned some heads bringing Fandango down the river.
