[Rhodes22-list] Sail Area

I love these exchanges on sail area.  Our sailing area is on the east
coast of Florida - primarily on the St. Lucie River, the Intra-Coastal or WX
permitting a run on the Atlantic.  A 150 Genny is often too much sail and
find I have it reefed three or four wraps to stay on my feet.  Our main
has the vertical batten just forward of the clew at the point where the main
stops being furled.   Where we are located a 120 or 130 would do just
fine.  However, on light air days it is nice to have a little extra sail
to catch what air there is.

I
believe that the 175 is primarily for inland lakes where the wind can be little
to none at times.

In any event we are able to get up over 6 knots with the battened main and the 150, and again, sometimes with the genny furled a tad.

Rummy,
I still consider myself a Rookie Rhodie so I can't claim I have a real need
for a larger main sail but I offer the following reasons why I am
"interested".
1) If Stan is looking into it, it must be worth looking into.
2) I have struggled with tacking the 175 in light winds without hangups and
I have struggled to point upwind as well as I would like. I have considered
a smaller genoa or jib, but I don't want to be limited in sail area.  The
SA/D numbers are not impressive with small main and smaller jib.   If I had
a larger main, maybe I could give up some sq. ft up front.  As you say, the
handling could change.
(I have added some telltales at intermediate points on the 175 this year,
so maybe I will have better luck pointing when reefed - I am also going to
install hardware on cabin top to sheet inside the stays)
