Hi Marlan,
We don't have the tiller to motor connection but have found that
docking improves with practice. Even with two of us, a sudden gust of
wind can throw off your carefully calculated approach but it
definitely gets better with practice. You learn how the boat will
respond to various maneuvers. Our old marina had mooring balls and we
did a lot of practice motoring up to them from different directions
so we could learn to predict how the boat would respond. All of the
cruising we did the first 10 years we had the boat also helped us
learn how to deal effectively with various docking configurations (no
two are ever the same). When we changed outboards a few years ago, we
had to learn how to predict the response with the new one so it's
always a learning process.

One of the best explanations of the variables is Jack Klang's
mini-treatise on docking. If you ever get a chance to see his
demonstrations at the Annapolis Sailboat show it's well worth it. I
think he's been at the Quantum Sails booth the last few years. He's
getting up there in age so catch him while you can. Here's a link to
his handout.
http://www.fsc.com.au/cproot/442/3/DockingManeuvering.pdf It's very helpful.

The boat will maneuver best (under most conditions) with the rudder
fully down (it should tilt forward slightly under the boat so you
don't tear up the rudder with the prop) and the centerboard down.

Best of luck and congrats on a successful launch.
