I use autohelm on a 22 footer. Simple answer. Autohelm is not the answer for this. Use your $450  to fix the sail or get a new one made and get a tiller lock device. Autohelm on a small boat works best to hold you on a good course while cruising. Just my opinion from 16 years using autohelm and tiller lock.
