The single screw was your earlier email explanation. I thought it was yours. The fitting we acquired from WEST Marine for the 22 I am rehabbing has three holes. We did not check my partner's 22 until after you explained the single screw hinge and pivot system. He said his mast step is screwed down by one pretty hefty screw. His is 78 or 79. Now we are thoroughly confused. I'm sure we will hear from the gang pretty quick.

Something has to give. Through bolting and reinforcing the surrounding area of the cabin top, as we have done, might raise the threshold level for dismasting. Your point is that at some level of (leverage) force through bolting can result in costly damage to the structure. We agree. You also point out that the pivoting hinge would allow the mast to come down in any direction without becoming disconnected from the cabin top or disconnecting with little damage. That's a really good point. By the way, pivoting and single screw attachment is news and I don't think anyone mentioned that detail. Our fixture has three screw/bolt holes.
