[Rhodes22-list] Bilge Pump Decision Made

Marlan,
For connecting to the sink drain, suggest something like shown in the photo. It's how the bilge pump was hooked up in my previous boat. Note that you want the loop in bilge hose to go as high up as possible under the counter to keep water from entering the drain line when heeled over and the through hull is submerged. If you plan to hook up to your battery so that the pump can be active all the time, make sure you put a check valve on the drain line. Otherwise, what happens is the pump will pump all the water out of the bilge and shut off. Some water will still be in the line and when the pump shuts off, it falls back into the bilge, reactivating the pump and the cycle repeats. Next thing you know your battery is dead and/or your pump is burned out. I had my bilge pump on manual. I'd start it up before going out each time and let if run until the bilge was dry (you can hear it stop pumping) and then shut it off. Once I caulked around the rub rail, I got little or no water in the boat and almost never used it after that. - rob

Subject: [Rhodes22-list] Bilge Pump Decision Made

Hi all,

Thank you for your thoughts and advice on bilge pumps. I have purchased the Supersub Smart 650 from Whale Pumps (650 gallons per hour & automatic activation). It will fit nicely in the bilge space and it has received good reviews. Practical Sailor likes it. It fits in my budget (approx: $70).

I plan to attach it to one of the wooden stringers in the bilge area forward of the keel/centerboard and run a hose up to the thru-hull used by the sink. I'm not sure how I will connect it with the sink drain. I'll research that some more & let you know what I decide.

I plan to connect it directly to the battery (which is below the sink on my Rhodes) and use an in-line fuse. I might add a switch for manual over-ride, but that is something else I need to research and think about.
