[Rhodes22-list] Water Tank

David:

We winterized the water system on our 33 over numerous Lake Superior winters
from October to June with water system antifreeze that sounds like what you
mentioned. There was never any odor at winters end and I do not believe it
can create the condition you experienced by itself. I think there had to be
something in the tank already that created the odor. We had one experience
with a foul odor in the water system from algae growth in the lines. A
little bleach cleaned it up nicely and a small amount in the system each
year kept it clean.

We brought our refurbished 1992 back to Port Angeles from Edenton last
August. In getting it set up for the winter, I realized I could not empty
the water tank completely or clean it. I believe that if you cannot empty
and clean the system completely, it will accumulate dirt and growth build up
over time regardless of bleach or any other solution you use.

My first thought was to install a 4" black PVC inspection and cleaning port
in the top which would have worked fine. But, my tank had enough patches and
such that I chose to replace it with one purchased on line from
Plastic-Mart.com. I specified a 4" inspection/cleaning port. I can now
completely empty, clean and dry the inside of the tank easily. You can
customize the tank at purchase to any size, shape and port configuration you
choose. I simply selected one of their standard sizes (13.5" x 10" x 24")
and sent a drawing specifying the port sizes and locations.

On a side note, we arrived at the marina for our second weekend in our new
33 to find that the waste line had been punctured by a cabinet installation
screw when the boat was built. The waste tank contents from the prior
weekend were now in the bilge. Now that was an odor. We experienced a very
nasty evening of clean-up and several weeks of repeated follow-up cleaning
to get rid of the aroma. What fun!

Good luck with the new season and happy sailing!

Jay
