The three 40 amp hr Lipo Batteries store about 1.56 KW-hrs of energy.
the lead acid ones that I previously used were 85 amp -hr marine batteries, so three of them stored about 3 KW-hrs of energy when new.

In typical sailing conditions i run the motor about 5 minutes to get off the dock, into the wind,&  unfurl the sails. Then another 5 minutes at the end of the sail to furl the sails and dock the boat.  I may also occasionally run the motor if the wind dies or if I need to go directly into the wind.  Neither set of batteries have ever run out of power in 10 years of sailing with them.  Oh, some times if the wind is light I'll run the electric at low speed for several hours, it helps the Rhodes to tack with the heavy 175 genoa.

The motor will push the boat to about  5 knots with one person on board.

power use depends on how may people are in the boat and how fast you wish to drive it.  The Minnkota motor that I mentioned uses an electronic controller to minimize energy use when traveling at less than full speed. there is also a German motor that is even more efficient & more expensive. you can see the spects on it here: http://www.torqeedo.com/us/

i have used it in both salt water and lake environments.  If I want to take a muilti day  cruise off the coast I use my gasoline motor because it has a much longer range & I might need to run it all day for several days on two 5 gal tanks. the nice feature of the Rhodes is that it is easy to trailer so that you can explore all sorts of  interesting places.

I that you enjoy it.

Interesting suggestion. How long do the batteries last on a charge?

Since you are a director of music, and you sail on a lake, please permit me to suggest an electric outboard.  I use a long shaft 101 lb thrust Minkota.  The current version is

Minn Kota Riptide T/112
(112 Lbs. Thrust, 52" Shaft)
This is  a salt water rated motor in case you want to trailer your boat to a more interesting location.  it is quiet in case you enjoy music, bird songs or just the lapping of waves or the tingling of your rigging.  Also, it starts every time with no need to pull a started cord.  Also, it has high torque a low speed: Very useful in maneuvering around docks. Cost is about $840.  You can lift it with one hand.  You will need Three 12V batteries.  You could buy these at Costco along with a three bank charger from Minkota, or if the concept of light weight appeals, buy three 12V, 40 AMP-hr prismatic  LIPO batteries on the internet. the cost of gasoline is zero.  the maintenance cost is also zero.  The Lipo batteries although more expensive than lead acid last 4 times longer. my batteries are ~ 13 lbs each as opposed to 35 lbs for lead acid.

peace and quiet

Joe
