[Rhodes22-list] Reakistic Expectations for Rhodes 22

My guess (I'm far from an expert) is that you may have had some leaks around
deck fittings which allowed rain or snow melt water into the core of the
deck or cabin. Is the cracking near the mast, cleats, fairleads, chain
plates, ports, or stanchions? Ask the maintenance folks to check for
moisture in areas which have cracked - whether by using a moisture meter or
by listening while rapping on it. Graham has wrestled with a delaminated
core; perhaps he has some other thoughts. It's hard to imagine the hull
remaining relatively rigid while beating through waves while the deck and
cockpit surfaces flexed enough to crack. Another possibility is that the
rigging wasn't tensioned enough to keep the mast from pumping as you hit the
waves, but then the cracking would only be around the chain plates and
perhaps near the tabernacle - not down in the cockpit.

Regarding the boat falling off to leeward - it sounds like you're fighting
with a lee helm. See what you can do to get more push from the wind toward
the aft end of the boat (trim the main, furl the Genoa or ease its sheet,
rake the mast aft...), or make the front of the boat resist lateral motion
more (move weight forward, drop the centerboard...). Stating the obvious
here, but if you take Bob's lead when he heavily reefed NoKaOi, you'll find
it easier to keep Ozone flatter and her rudder deeper in the water when the
winds pipe up. As Graham noted, you may not be able to sail as tight to the
wind as you otherwise could, but you'll be in better control where you are
able to sail.

No cracking on the inside of the boat, just on the deck and the cockpit on
the outside surfaces not on the inside walls. The hull on the sides of the
boat did not crack or craze.

The boat fell off to leeward. I could not point into the wind, and it blew
me away from the direction in which the wind was coming. The diamond board
was down all the way.

I am going to have the maintenance folks at our marina look at the crazing
and cracking.

For its size the Rhodes 22 is better equipped than many boats much larger. i
looked at a Peasron P-26 yesterday and it didn't even have a galley. We
Rhodies are really blessed! I have had many envious skippers at our marina
ogling our Ozone!
