Curtis:

Everyone on this list will likely tell you that you can do no better than to
buy a Rhodes 22 for the type of sailing you describe.

The add looks great and seems to suggest that the boat has been well
maintained and that much boat for $3000 looks pretty good to me. Still,
boats all require work to maintain them. Read through the archives and you
will see the types of issues that have arisen. In particular, my advice
would be to check the deck for softness, cracking or any indication of water
getting into the core. Also check the mast step to see if there is any sign
of it sagging. You can also check the base of the mast support to see if the
floor has been giving way and the floor stringers to make sure they are
still solid. Most other problems can be fixed pretty easily as you go..Just
don't expect a boat that is 35 years old to be maintenance free.

One of the beautiful thing about this boat are the owners on this list who
are always eager to help solve any problem that arises. Nothing much arises
now that others have not already addressed.

Good luck,

Graham

Subject: [Rhodes22-list] Potential Purchase

All,

I'm currently boat-less, and looking to purchase a boat. I found a '79
Rhodes 22 for sale ($3000) on Craigslist. Its been listed for at least a
few weeks, and the price has come down at least once.

What are the things that I should look for? This would be my first boat,
i've only got about 20 hours logged solo, another 20 as crew on various
boats. I'm not looking to pickup a project, just a trailerable boat that
will let me easily solo every so often, and based on reviews the Rhodes 22
looks easily solo-able.
