Brooks,

I've sailed an R22 since 1981 and have always used the extension tongue on
LI Sound ramps. It just makes it easier and a bit safer for the tow
vehicle. The only problem is backing down the ramp when extended - keep
your hand on the bottom of the steering wheel and move it the way you want
the trailer to turn.

Tides here are 7-8 feet so we cannot launch or recover unless we are within
an hour of high tide, even with the extension tongue. Launching is easier.
Just back in until the stern floats and then use the lines to pull her off
the trailer from the finger piers. When I started back in the 80s, we did
not have any fingers so my wife would climb in the boat and I would back in
at high speed and hit the brakes when she floated. The boat would just
slide right in and my wife would need to motor over to the dock once she got
the motor started. It was a bit interesting some days.

When recovering, it is important to have the trailer in deep enough. We
found that the perfect depth was when the front 4 inches of the bunks were
the only part of the trailer above water. Then haul the boat up until the
last port window was over the axel.

Good luck - we didn't have a laptop when we learned. I still do not have
much luck with salt water and electronics having doused several pagers, cell
phones and one ipad. Maybe I should just leave the world behind when I go
sailing.

Thanks to all of you for the great feedback. I'll definitely try w/o
extender first.

And Shawn, thanks so much for the link to pictures. I'll study them some
more before I take off - in fact I think I'll bring laptop along with pics
up so I can check just in case.

Brooks
