[Rhodes22-list] Furl sails or lower boom

Shawn asked me how I choose to shorten sail or lower boom.
First, let me remind you I'm on a small,well protected lake. The steady
wind dosent get thru near as well as the gusts,so I have to set my sails
to handle the biggest expected gusts. When the wind starts picking up,I
wait until I round up once or twice,then take the 130 jib down to about
100. I think it is better to furl the main first,as it has more effect on
the healing, but it's a whole lot easier to furl the jib by pinching and
luffing  the sail. If that doesn't help , I get on a port tack and take in
about a foot of main sail. If the wind keeps building I'll take in another
foot of main,and try that for awhile. If I still am getting
overpowered,it's time to drop the boom. After dropping the boom I can
usually get away with deploying a little more sail. For the same lazy
reason as above,I start with the jib.
It seems to me that if I take in more than half of the main sail, I lose
too much righting ability,when I release the main sheet.i like a little
safety bank to tap into for the big gusts. Right or wrong that's how I do
it.
