So Peter,
,Here is an email (below with a couple of pictures) that Alice sent out a
couple of hours ago. Crossing the Sea of Cortez from San Carlos was
(obviously) successful. A bit of a challenge as the sea state was quite
high with steep 2 meter waves with only a 4 second interval in sets of 3 on
a broad reach (stb tack), A number of the boats returned rather than
cross. I knew the wind would continue to moderate and the seas would begin
to lay down by sunrise 5 hours after we left. We motor sailed (70 % main
only) to get maximum speed so we would reach the other side of the Sea
before sunset. We arrived at 4:30, an hour before sunset, after 14 hours
of sailing over a distance of 83 statue miles or 72 nautical miles (I
think). So we averaged over 5 kn on the crossing, we were flying. Arrived
at Punta Civato (you can google earth our course) and spent the night and
slept late, we were exhausted. Sailed wing and wing for 17 miles in 17 kn
winds and did some surfing down the waves to a large north facing bay
called Bahia Conception. We anchored in the NW corner for a couple of
days. Hiked and day sailed. Hitch hiked into the nearest town (Mulege, a
very cool desert town with a palm lined river through it) to get gas for
the boat, just like the old, real old, days. The trip from Santispac Bay
to our next destination, Caleta Jaunico just south of Putno Basillio was a
very long 54 mile trip. The last 48 miles was southbound in 20 kn winds
and 1 1/2 meter quarting seas. As Alice says we surfed for 10 hours on a
4,000 pound surfboard. Jaunico was beautiful and protected, took lots of
pictures which should show up on the website sometime soon. You can can
expect lots of details and narration in a couple of weeks. Check the
website from time to time (see the link in Alice's email below). Go ahead
and forward this email on to the Rhodes List. The subject line should be
"Crossed the Sea of Cortez--at last). I'll try to keep you better
informed. Looking forward to seeing you in Florida.

All’s well. We are in Loreto for provisioning. We’ve spent some lovely
days in quiet bays on the Baja waiting out heavy blows from the North that
were whipping up the seas. We’ve hiked, rowed, swum, explored, and enjoyed
the sun and wind. Alice even got the chance to do some water aerobics!

Sailing this time of year is highly social. We meet people everywhere we
go and see them again in new anchorages. It’s amazing how much time being
social takes!

Thanks to the Mikula’s, we’ve got an evening date with the Shanghai card
game. It keeps us busy in the dark early evening hours hunkered down in
the cabin in the night chill. Chris is beating me by a long shot. Had to
impose a penalty for each time he moved all the cards around on the boat to
try to make a play and it didn’t work, however. Thanks to the Kline’s we
opened a delicious bottle of their Dragonfly Time Tempernillo with dinner
and the card game.

Each day we rise to gorgeous sunrises, and end the day with beautiful
sunsets.Highs in the upper 70's and lows in the low 60's or occasionally a
bit lower. Chris gets up in the middle of the night (old man syndrome) and
sees shooting stars, the rising of Venus and last night the glow of the
planet on the water.

We were planning on trying to be in La Paz for Christmas, but with the
strong northerly winds, we are a little concerned about making it back by
mid-January to prepare for our son Nick’s visit, so we’ll hang around
Loreto. There are plenty beautiful Islands and shores to explore around
here.

We’re (mainly Alice) is still working on trying to update the website.
It’s hard with the lack of cell coverage, but keep checking
www.sailingenosis.weebly.com for new entries, updates and pictures.

Best to you all, and if we don’t get a chance to communicate before
Christmas, Happy Holidays! We’ll be thinking about you.

PS. Please feel free to forward this email to those you think might be
interested.

Chris and Alice.
