James:

I did a little further checking into using epoxy with matt and it seems we
are both right. Apparently you can use the matt if you take particular care
to apply the epoxy so that it penetrates thoroughly and the work does not
involve sharp corners. Matt has polyester threads in it that dissolve with
polyester resin but not with epoxy with the result that it will not take a
form properly with epoxy but will be strong and solid on flat surfaces.
Looks like it also builds thickness faster than woven roving. I think I
still prefer to use the rovings in most situations but if I have to fill a
large hole such as that created when I removed the inner chainplates, matt
would have been a better for the deep part with rovings near the surface.

Here is an excellent explanation embedded into a useful video on making
common fibreglass repairs using epoxy.

Graham,

Yes,  chop is the loose cut fibers,  it also comes in a mat.

The last book i read said that modern construction methods for fiberglass
use a woven-mat-woven layup pattern to gain the most strength. there was
discussion of some specialty single direction fiberglass as well but that it
isn't used as much due to cost of the materials.

My father in law,  showed me a way to pre-impregnate the glass,  stick it to
the repair site and then go over it again with epoxy to smooth it out.

I am waiting for some slightly warmer weather to put my book learning to the
test. Should be interesting to see if i can manage to not coat myself more
than the boat.

James
