About keeping sealant fresh, I recently bought some Dow Corning sealant that
has to be used within one year but the tubes I was sent were already 8
months old and I planned to use them next summer. I called Dow Corning and
asked what I might do to extend their life. They suggested sealing them in
plastic and freezing them. He pointed out however, that the sealant might
still be unfit for use even if it hasn't hardened in the tube and suggested
that I squeeze out a bead of sealant and check to make sure it cures within
a few hours. Otherwise you might end up with a gooey mess that never cures
properly. Now, whether this applies to other products I don't know but it
seems like something that is easy to do and might save you a having a very
messy problem later on.

Bob and Richard,

I think a variation on your suggestions is worth a try. I agree it's only
necessary to have a good seal in the area between the water and a line
drawn roughly along inside edges of the bolt holes. That's the area I'm
concentrating on for assuring smoothness. Again, easy for me to launch and
test.

I'm reluctant to use 4200 but did have good luck removing a speed transducer
bedded with 4200. My neoprene gasket is still good so may just improve on
grosser spots and try it with no sealant first.

BTW: 4200/5200 tip: They tell you once you open a tube it lasts like 48
hours. I found putting tube in fridge it lasts for months - at least it
doesn't harden/thicken noticeably.
