Hi Susan,
I'll have to look at ours when we get the mast raised. I've seen 
velcro tabs that hold battens in place. I think ours has one but its 
not readily apparent because it's in the pocket. And yes the batten 
really does help the sail keep its shape, both when you are sailing 
and when everything is snugged up with the sail furled. The less 
movement you have there, the less wear on the sail.
