Wow! Great responses. Thanks to all. 

Sounds like the pop top and hatch position are the favorite gotchas for
people with the mast raising system - which includes me. 

So, as an infrequent mast raiser/lower-er, I hereby pledge to read the
instructions through two or three times before each exercise. 

Why, with so much evidence to the contrary, do we continue to put so much
trust in our memory?

And to those w/o the system, my hat's off to you. I have to admit you've
made me very glad my boat came with the system.

FWIW: I did drop a mast once, almost on my wife's head. But on a 16' boat so
long ago I've forgotten (or repressed) the details.
