Richard,

I don't know about this.

The base plate is designed to tear out when support of the mast fails.
This is an essential safety feature when the rigging fails underway. But I
think tear out most often happens when lowering the mast.

The first time it happened to me, there was no damage to the mast or boat
(transom), except the base plate screws let go. With your thing, I fear
you would at least end up with a very bent mast.

Then I stuck the screws in with penetrating epoxy because the wood base
under the mast plate began to rot. The next time I lost the mast, the
epoxy came out with lots of gelcoat damage.

If you have any spongy-ness around the base plate, it is best to replace
the wood underneath. In my '93, that wood was a square piece completely
separate from the rest of the core. That prevents the rot from spreading
into the core and it makes repair relatively easy.

Regards,

Rick
