[Rhodes22-list] Sailing right angles - traveller location

Curtis:

I am interested in your comment about locating your traveller to just aft of
the cabin rather than having it located on the back stays. In my rebuild I
will need to decide where to place the traveller and would like to know what
you and others think the pros and cons are for various locations.

Before the rebuild I installed the traveller just in front of the lazarette.
That gave good purchase but the mainsheet was often in the way of the tiller
and was generally awkward to handle. I wonder how well the traveller works
when it is located way back on the aft stays as there would not be much
downward force to flatten the mainsail.

To move it up to the cabin might be a good location but I expect that the
blocks would need to be beefed up on the mainsheet.

Has anyone else located their traveller to aft of the cabin or have tried
various locations and if so what advice might you offer?

Thanks,

Rick,

How do you perform in less than perfect conditions with your headsail? I
race weekly (for recreational, not competitive reasons, and come in last
even with a ~270 PHRF). In my typical air, I have 3-5 knots with 1/2 - 1
knot current (Susquehanna River mouth).

I single hand and at best I can get 110 tack angle with the 170. It doesn't
change any with rolling the head up some and running the jib sheets inside
the outer shrouds.

My current plan is to move from the rope traveler between the backstays to a
rail behind the cabin (the rail was installed by a previous owner, but
didn't provide the traveler system, of which mine just arrived in the mail).
And as soon as fiscally possible move to a 130.

The only place I even get close to keeping up is downwind wing-on-wing legs,
but the club doesn't race non-spin boats straight downwind so... I'm always
well behind. In the below race, I was lapped before I even made it around
the northern mark.
