If the damage goes deep, you might also need to use a filler before
finishing with gelcoat. You don't want the gel coat to be too thick. Just be
sure that the filler is polyester and not epoxy as the gelcoat may not
adhere to the epoxy.

Get a standard Gelcoat repair kit preferably one with color match.  The
gelcoat that starts white yellows a bit with time and grime.
