You need the all around white light at the top of the mast for anchoring, and
you need the steaming light while motoring at night. They will never be on
at the same time so you may need additional wiring. 

I sail mostly at night, and I'd request that you do your fellow night
sailors a favor and spend the extra money to get super bright LED lights for
at least the anchor light.
