Charles:

What does your shift extender look like? Does it fold or collapse?I was
considering that option but I don't want the extension to interfere with the
motor tilting.

Yep. That's the problem. 

I have learned to reach over the traveler to adjust the throttle and have
attached an extension stick to the shifter to assist in changing from drive
to reverse.
