David,

Two persons can easily raise or lower the original non-IMF from the bow.
There is no need for a mast crane. It is really not that heavy and the
second person is there for safety and when you need to change your grip at
about 30 degrees from the horizontal. The mast and genoa combo are easily
supported by the bow pulpit.

If you have the IMF mast, the weight is considerably greater. The IMF rig
is best raised or lowered from a mast crutch located in the stern. The
crutch helps to start raising or finish lowering at a point that is well
above the horizontal (about 30 degrees). The crutch reduces the effort
required by the mast crane to start raising or finish lowering the mast
assembly. If the mast was perfectly horizontal it would be nearly
impossible to use the crane. Using a crane system requires a single
individual, although a second is recommended for safety and in case lines or
shrouds get caught during the process.

I have raised and lowered the IMF rig without the benefit of a crane system
with four strong guys and two six packs of beer. Unfortunately, even
increasing the beer ratio would not enable two persons to safely lower an
IMF rig without a crane.

Any suggestions out there for a 2-person lowering?
