As you suggest, the answer is going to vary somewhat based on trailer design, and perhaps some other variables.  

I occasionally back my boat and trailer into my carport to work on it.  The vertical clearance is 9’ 1".  It fits without much room to spare.  I’d estimate the actual max height of my boat on the trailer to be about 8’ 6”.
