[Rhodes22-list] Gas Tank storage while under way?

The aft locker is pretty open to the outside under the seats, but that’s at the top the compartment. Gas fumes being heavier than air would collect toward the bottom. For this reason, pretty much everyone would recommend against storing gasoline in the aft locker. (I’d call it the lazarette, but I don’t know how to spell it, and neither does my spell checker.)

I’d find having the tank on the cockpit sole fairly intolerable, so I’d probably buy a new one that will fit under the seats.

I’m pretty sure every gas tank will have a vent in the cap that can be either open or closed. This instructions will tell you to always close the vent unless the tank is connected to the motor, and the motor is running. I almost always leave mine open. I do this because I’m afraid that if I close the vent, I will forget to open it when starting the motor, and the gas-starved motor will quit at the most inconvenient time possible. However, another side benefit to always leaving the vent open is that it may prevent your gas tank from blowing up like a balloon if left in the sun.

When I first used the tank, it was a low enough profile to secure under the bench. However, my gas tank (permanently) expanded after being in the sun and will no longer fit under the bench seat.
