Jesse.

I also grew up in Missouri, then Kansas. Perry Lake 30 years ago was muddy
power boat territory, not worth visiting on a weekend between April and
October. We daysailed a Bucc 18 as a family on Clinton near Lawrence KS
around that time. It wasn't bad, except for the semi submerged trees.
For reasons I dismiss as temporary unwelcome sanity, I never explored the
sailing club when I was at KSU. I'd give them a call and see what advice
their commodore can give you before you decide to haul the boat. It looks
like they are still an active organization, they'd probably be fun to hang
with if social restrictions allow.

I'm primarily a puddle sailor as well, and pretty much memorized every tree
on my home reservoir. Short tacking and the perpetually close lee shore
during a squall do make for some fun moments. I really need more time on
the great lakes.
