Roger, 

There is invisible data within email messages.  I think it more likely that Pipermail is using this data, rather than creating it.  But it seems pretty clear that opening an old email and removing all its content will leave the hidden data unchanged.

So, if your intent is to start a new thread, it would be best to start by creating a completely new email.
