[Rhodes22-list] Photos of the "bad mast!"

Tony,

I hate to be the bearer of bad news. As I look at the damage, it looks like it spans at least 25% of the circumference of the mast. Even worse, the two holes are right across from each other. Aluminum alloys have to be specially heat treated in order to be both strong and fatigue resistant. The welding process will destroy the heat treatment in the heat affected area. Even if you welded a patch all the way around the mast big enough to cover the damage, the weld bead will create a weak, soft spot in the mast above and below the patch. The only solution would be to run the whole mast thru heat treatment after the patch was welded on. That would require a furnace big enough to fit the whole mast and all the fittings would have to be removed first and then reattached. At the end of the day, it all comes down to cost. I suspect it will be cheaper to replace the mast vs repair it.

Honestly that doesn’t look too bad to me, and I’d be shocked if that wasthe only reason to get an entire new (specialized and hard to find) mast.Remember that, under load, the spreaders are under compression and nottension, so the mounts to the mast are more to keep them in place whenthey’re not under tension. Just like the bolt at the foot of the mast.I think there are a few ways to address the issue, including reinforcingthe material behind it, or just adding a new piece of thin strong materialbetween the spreader and the mast to act like a giant washer of sorts. Youmight also be able to relocate the spreaders up or down the mast an inch ortwo to find some good metal to connect them to…I don’t think that small ofa change in geometry would cause other issues. On Sun, Jun 19, 2022 at 2:06 PM Tony Jonaitis via Rhodes22-list <rhodes22-list at rhodes22.org> wrote:> Here is the damage to both sides of the mast...basically under the> spreaders!> -------------- next part --------------> A non-text attachment was scrubbed...> Name: rhodes1.JPG> Type: image/jpeg> Size: 1072663 bytes> Desc: not available> URL: <> https://nam12.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=http%3A%2F%2Frhodes22.org%2Fpipermail%2Frhodes22-list%2Fattachments%2F20220619%2Fff8a61bc%2Fattachment.jpe&data=05%7C01%7C%7Caf5ed2ad766e448b857808da524c63e9%7C84df9e7fe9f640afb435aaaaaaaaaaaa%7C1%7C0%7C637912785303730940%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C3000%7C%7C%7C&sdata=p00xLVqFJELWkS2je3ISEhsnPKX4fi8lE2S71zjA%2FxQ%3D&reserved=0> >> -------------- next part --------------> A non-text attachment was scrubbed...> Name: rhodes2.JPG> Type: image/jpeg> Size: 2521446 bytes> Desc: not available> URL: <> https://nam12.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=http%3A%2F%2Frhodes22.org%2Fpipermail%2Frhodes22-list%2Fattachments%2F20220619%2Fff8a61bc%2Fattachment-0001.jpe&data=05%7C01%7C%7Caf5ed2ad766e448b857808da524c63e9%7C84df9e7fe9f640afb435aaaaaaaaaaaa%7C1%7C0%7C637912785303730940%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C3000%7C%7C%7C&sdata=GzEUyGcABSYxJAahS3gdtNgT4Qf3OkK70p4nsV113Dk%3D&reserved=0> >> -------------- next part --------------> A non-text attachment was scrubbed...> Name: rhodes3.JPG> Type: image/jpeg> Size: 942351 bytes> Desc: not available> URL: <> https://nam12.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=http%3A%2F%2Frhodes22.org%2Fpipermail%2Frhodes22-list%2Fattachments%2F20220619%2Fff8a61bc%2Fattachment-0002.jpe&data=05%7C01%7C%7Caf5ed2ad766e448b857808da524c63e9%7C84df9e7fe9f640afb435aaaaaaaaaaaa%7C1%7C0%7C637912785303730940%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C3000%7C%7C%7C&sdata=VEQI0vCURq3KcUilhQRuFIh4VXMd5n5mKQhONqAsXz4%3D&reserved=0> >>
