Phyllis:

The reason the 'old salts' recommended the Mac was their immediate
availability (hint). There is a Mac in the slip next to mine. Used boats
are very available (hint). Somebody unloaded one on Stan a few years ago.
He sings the praises of the Mac while he sails a different brand. Ask Stan
how easy it is to sell a used Mac (better yet do not bother reminding him).

Yet I have met people who are happy with their Mac's. One couple I
met loved to just sit in the cockpit at the dock and drink for hours on end.
Occasionally, they would go for an hour's sail.

The Mac is water ballast. I have been told that the Mac with water
on board points well. I was not sure what he was comparing it to. However,
some of us have a problem with water ballast.

You might explore the FAQ site. There are comparisons of the R22
with other boats. See: http://www.geocities.com/blew_skies/

Jay, Also, I grew up sailing on a 36' gaff rig no auxiliary sloop on the
Hudson River 1956-1992. 'Very sad now, miss my boat which is now at the
International Yacht Restoration School in Newport awaiting restoration...and
lots of money to make it happen...but I do know how to sail- I am just
looking for a vessel that can sail in little wind, no wind, close to the
wind, lots of wind... and allow for cruising and day sailing for my family
that won't cost me a fortune. plus I need to figure out where to sail
from...Raritan Bay maybe, but will gladly make a southerly trek to LBI.
Thanks again. Phyllis
