Mary Lou,

He told me a story about running aground on the ICW. A big powerboat that
was going by so he called it on the VHF and asked the guy to give him some
big wake. The guy obliged and they were able to back off on the wave crests.
Imagine that - useful wake <g>.

The bottom of the keel looks like that because, in her current slip, she's
in the mud at low tide. Surveyor said no problem, though, everything's solid
and the anti-fouling paint is fine under the discoloration, though.

Mark

Mark,
Sounds like the voice of experience. Actually looking at the bottom of the
keel......

We haven't tried looking for high speed access on the water - heck we are
finally going to broadband here at home.

If you keep the boat in MD they'll want their piece of your pie. 5% excise
unless you've already paid that amount or more to another state. If that's
not a problem, you could get to Deale up 301 and stay outside of the
Beltway, Solomons too.

Keep us informed.

Thanks Ed. I saw his post on the Gulf Coast sailnet list too. I'm
definitely interested. The Mississippi coast has some great sailing,
although it takes me a couple of days to get out there. One of these days,
I'll have to get a trailer. I do sometimes go canoe/kayak out there. It's
really nice, but I don't know the good places to go.

Mark, A million congratulations. You bought the exact boat that exist only
in my mind as of now. A double ender with all the ornate wood and serious
not so ornate fittings that show this is a serious blue water boat. Please
keep the list updated on your preparation and plans. Did you have much

I sail a Rhodes 19, and am considering a Rhodes 22. I know it a s totally
different type of boat, as far as performance goes. My question to anyone
who would comment, is: Why a R22 over an Oday 22, Catalina, Com-pac. I do
like the shallow draft, but am concerned with upwind performance, pointing
and folding up problems. What are god conditions used R22's going for these
days. Thanks, Fred.

Fred:
There are other 'Fred's" on the list. Most on this list are owners
of R22's, but there are several owners of 19's and other Rhodes designs. I
expect others will reply to your inquiry over the next days and weeks.
Since we moved onto this list, the site keeper, Michael Meltzer, has
kept an archive of old emails. So one thing for you to do is peruse the old
emails. Unfortunately, people change subjects without changing the subject

Fred,
I've only sailed a Rhodes 19 once but it was a sweet boat. If you go with a
Rhodes 22 the standard 175 furling genoa and sail with it rolled up a lot
and with the in-mast main, the upwind performance will be good but not as
good as your R19.

Not sure what you mean by "folding up" problems. If you mean putting it
away for trailoring, it will take more time with than an R19 but people who
do it frequently have it down to about 40 minutes. If you get the mast
raising system it is doable with one person even with the heavy in-mast
furling main and furling jib (which get raised and lowered all together).

My understanding is that O'Day 22s are heavy and slow. Catalina 22s provide
good performance but not the cruising luxuries of a Rhodes 22 and if you
sail in salt water, the swing keel becomes a maintenance issue. On the R22,
the centerboard is fiberglass and the pennant is line - nothing to corrode.
Com-Pac 23s are nice boats but do not give as good upwind performance,
especially in light air. My sense is that of the 4 boats you mentioned the
R22 can be sailed well in a wider variety of conditions and it will take
you there in style. If you want to cruise, spending nights on the boat, the
R22 is better equipped and more comfortable.

If you want a good condition R22, the best way to get one is to buy
recycled from General Boats as they will have thoroughly inspected the boat
and you can have it outfitted as you wish. You pay a premium for this but
we found that it was worth it. You'll have to ask them what they are going
for these days. There are never many used Rhodes 22s around at any one time
as there are not all that many out there to begin with. General Boats buys
many of them back.

Where are you located?

Fred,

The Rhodes 19 is a great little boat and as you already know a bit different

than the Rhodes 22. I am not sure of your reasons for changing but I am
going to guess you need more room for over nighting. That being said I do
race my R22 for fun and I can keep up or pass the other pocket cruisers that

race.

I also considered some of the boats you mentioned before purchasing the
Rhodes. Compac makes a great boat but there were several things I didn't
like about the Compac 23. The biggest concerns were small cockpit and lack
of both a pop-top and CB. I race against a Compac 23 every now and then. It

is the slowest boat in our small race fleet. It has a shoal draft like the
R22 but no CB so it doesn't point well. They are well made though and I like

the lines. Compac still in business is a plus.

For a year or so an O'Day 222 slipped next to me. I am not sure what is
different about the O'Day 22 and the 222. The 222 had a shoal draft with CB
but no pop-top. I sailed past this boat easily. I really didn't think much
of the looks of the boat. The cabin layout was not as nice as the Rhodes.
Quality seems to vary, all of the boats are older and of course O'Day is not

around. On the plus side they are cheaper.

The Catalina 22 performs about the same as the R22 and has a pop-top but I
did not want a swing keel or wing keel. They are cheaper though and plenty
of them around. But I liked the cockpit and cabin lay out better in the
Rhodes. The positive floatation, strong rig, and stability made the Rhodes
look even better. I have sailed a Catalina 22; I am biased but I think the
Rhodes is a better balanced boat and plows through the chop like a much
bigger boat. The Catalina did not provide the same feel.

In regards to pointing ability; I think it really depends on sail plan. If
you have a genny larger than a 125 you can not sheet inside the outer shroud

with out furling. My 125 can be routed inside the shroud while providing
great sail shape. My boat points fine and I do well on the upwind legs. If
you go with the 170 Genny as your only sail you will sacrifice pointing
ability. Down wind and reaching the 170 performs great but if you have crew
you wouldn't be sailing down wind with your genny, you would be flying your
spinnaker. I wish my 155 was still usable but it needs some TLC.

General Boats sell used Rhodes 22 with a warranty. Many on this list have
purchased used boats direct from GB. I purchased my 84 2 years ago rom a
private owner 810 miles away in Madiison WI. I searched for about 6 months
on the net and eventually found a boat that suited my needs and budget.

It is a solid little boat and will handle a blow. I was out solo last Sunday

in a steady 20 Knot wind with gusts up to 35. I had the main and genny
furled and the boat was balanced. I was able to move upwind and tack through

the white caps without any problems. I never dipped the rail.

If you have any questions ask away.

Fred:

Sounds like you would use the boat like I do. It usually just me and
my wife sailing. We bring some drinks and sandwiches. I have had 5 in the
boat, but that is the exception.

I sail in South Carolina on Rummy's Lake aka Lake Hartwell. See:

http://www.sas.usace.army.mil/lakes/hartwell/

And I keep my boat at Big Water Marina on the South End of the Lake.
See:

http://familyoutdoors.com/pages/bigwater.htm

The cockpit is reason enough to get the Rhodes 22. The seats are long
enough to stretch out and go to sleep (zzzzzz). Or to sit 3 on the upwind
side. If you get a furling foresail and the IMF, it has to one of the
easiest boats to sail. To me those two features allow for fast sail use and
adjustment. But if you want to race, then conventional sails are probably
more effective.

This list is not controlled by General Boats nor any specific company.
Many of the comments don't relate to sailing. Do not be fooled, the posts
are coming from folks who own and sail the R22. So ask any question.

Fred,

My family had a Catalina 22 when we were growing up, and I sail a Rhodes
now. I was in the market for a Catalina when I stumbled across the first
Rhodes that I had seen. From the first glance, I liked the Rhodes better.
The biggest draws to me were:

1. The cockpit is noticably bigger. We like to take other people out
sailing, and we are very comfortable with 6 adults on board. I'm not sure
that would be the case with some of the others.

2. Innermast furling. I intended from the start to sail single-handed a
lot. (Ironically, this is a feature that I ultimately decided against, but
it sure would be nice to have when those summer squalls spring up suddenly.
Even without the IMF, the Rhodes is easy to single-hand. My wife
occasionally takes it out with no crew other than non-sailing friends, and
nothing is too heavy or difficult for them to do.)

3. The Rhodes is just plain good-looking. Velvet Elvis is the nicest
looking boat in our marina, even though it is the smallest, or very close to
being the smallest.

4. As I started to research the boat a little, I realized how beneficial
the centerboard design would be. As it turns out, my favorite gunkhole is
always mine and mine alone, since smaller boats aren't comfortable for an
overnight on the hook, and larger boats are afraid to traverse the sand bar
that guards the entrance.

And although I didn't know this at the time, the customer service you get
from General Boats couldn't possibly be matched by what you would get from a
bigger company. Where else can you get on the phone with the guys who have
been building the boat for decades and have them talk you through a problem?
I've seen Stan's home phone number posted for us on this list. (I know that
I wouldn't do the same for my customers :-))

Those were the big things for me. Others are really moved by the
floatation, mast raising system, motor mount, captains chairs, etc. All of
that is great too, but I'll leave it for those who feel passionate to
elaborate.

By the way, where are you located? Maybe one of us can take you sailing
soon!

The bimini's great. Hard to believe I sailed without it down here.

Speaking of rum, I tried Mt. Gay as my eggnog mixer this holliday season.
Very good, not that you didn't know that already.

Ben,

If you're mixing it with eggnog, you might as well just use Bacardi. In my
humble epinion, the only acceptable thing to add to Mt. Gay is a little ice.
I know Rummy mixes his with Coke, which is a crime in Minnesota. One of
these days he too will see the light. 8-)

The misspelling is growing on me now. I think I might start spelling it
like that all the time.

 Fred,

I owned an O'Day Mariner for three years prior to buying my '85 recycled
Rhodes 22 from GB. The Mariner has the same hull and similar rig to an R19.
Mine was a centerboard model. IMO, the keel/centerboard on the R22 is
greatly superior to the centerboard on the Mariner

I started looking to replace the Mariner when we were expecting our first
child. We wanted something larger, more comfortable and easier to
single-hand. The R22 with IMF fit the bill best. As previously described,
the cockpit is huge, the cabin is large enough, very comfy, and very well
laid-out. I was shocked to see how much larger it looked, as I never really
did a side-by-side comparison.

I have not actually raced the R22. I have, however 'outrun' Catalina 22s
and O'Day 22s. I have outrun some Catalina 25s too. I'm pretty sure at
least some of them were trying to catch up ;-) Of course, my equipment &
sails are all brand new. Still, I have no complaints about performance.
Others on the list do race and seem to do well.

I am happy with my choice. Pretty much everybody here is, but for different
reasons. Your reasons for considering the boat are likely different from
mine. A bit more about where you sail and why you are considering a change
might be helpful in getting more specific answers.

Fair Winds

I sail a Rhodes 19, and am considering a Rhodes 22. I know it a s totally
different type of boat, as far as performance goes. My question to anyone
who would comment, is: Why a R22 over an Oday 22, Catalina, Com-pac. I do
like the shallow draft, but am concerned with upwind performance, pointing
and folding up problems. What are god conditions used R22's going for these
days. Thanks, Fred. __________________________________________________

Don,
When would you like to do the Jam? We are available most weekends except
the weekends of Feb. 21 and Feb 28. I think Schaeffers worked well.

Have a great time on your windjammer - we expect to hear all about it.

Well that's what I thought. Glad to know you were thinking of us -grin-

We'll have a car too, just trying to figure out the logistics. Last year we
got there early and got a free parking place on the street. I don't think
I've ever been in a casino.....

I'll be interested to see the Seaward 26. I didn't much care for the 25 but
it certainly fills a niche. Speaking of filling niches, Com-Pac is going to
have its new 18 ft. sloop there. They've stopped making the 16 and the 19
and will now be making the Eclipse: 18 ft. keel centerboard sloop with a
stainless centerboard, open transom, masttender system, stainless arch.

See you there.

I see, now.

I sail Salem Harbor, MA on the north shore (with respect to Boston).

Or as we say up here "noth shoah"

BTW, I have had eight in the cockpit. At 6'1" the boom barely hits my head
standing in the cockpit, so sailing while sitting should be safe for all.

There is no centerboard trunk intruding into the cockpit as there is in the
Mariner. Hopping over the trunk while tacking was a major pain (quite
literally).

Have you noticed that since the announcement about the Seaward 26,
Stan has not been on the list? Has he communicated to anyone or has he
simply sailed away? Maybe nobody has made a political statement lately?

quote that was sent to me true?
                                Ed K

Subject: Great Answer from John Glenn

I don't know if this is true, but if it is true it is a great answer from
John Glenn.

Some people still don't understand why military personnel do what they do
for a living. This exchange Between Senators John Glenn and Sen. Howard
Metzenbaum is worth reading. Not only is it a pretty impressive and
impromptu speech, but it's also a good example of one man's explanation of
why men and women in the Armed Services do what they do for a living. This
is a typical, though sad, example of what some who have never served think
of the Military.

Senator Metzenbaum to Senator Glenn: "How can you run for Senate when you've
never held a "real job?"

Senator Glenn: "I served 23 years in the United States Marine Corps. I
served through two wars. I flew 149 missions. My plane was hit by
antiaircraft fire on 12 different occasions.

I was in the Space Program. It wasn't my checkbook, Howard; it was my Life
on the line. It was not a nine to five job, where I took time off to take
the daily cash receipts to the bank. I ask you to go with me ... as I went
the other day... to a Veterans Hospital and look those men - with their
mangled bodies - in the eye, and tell THEM they didn't hold a job!

You go with me to the Space Program at NASA and go, as I have gone, to the
widows and orphans of Ed White, Gus Grissom and Roger Chaffee...and you look
those kids in the eye and tell them that their DADS didn't hold a job.

You go with me on Memorial Day and you stand in Arlington National Cemetery,
where I have more friends buried than I'd like to remember, and you watch
those waving flags. You stand there, and you think about this Nation, and
you tell ME that those people didn't have a job?

I'll tell you, Howard Metzenbaum, you should be on your knees every day of
your life thanking God that there were some men - SOME MEN - who held REAL
job. And they required a dedication to a purpose - and a love of country and
a dedication to duty - that was more important than life itself. And their
self-sacrifice is what made this country possible.

I HAVE held a job, Howard! ---What about you?"

For those who don't remember - During W.W.II, Howard Metzenbaum was an
attorney representing the Communist Party in the USA. Now he is a Senator!

If you can read this, thank a teacher....
If you are reading it in English, thank a Veteran

Ed,

Snopes says TRUE. I say, too bad John didn't get up and kick Howard's ass!!!

He would have remembered that a lot longer than a little ass chewing. :-)

Happy New Year and greetings from the fridget norhteast. The old Hudson is
freezing up quickley this week. Does anyones older boat have the top of the

roller fr.jib/forstay attached to a halyard? Same question concerning
rollermain. It seams my boats sails are fixed at the top of the mast but the
provision
is there to hook up halyards so these sails can be removed with the mast up.
If
I add a seperate forstay I can drop the roll.jib set up back a bit to a
fitting 6 inches from the bow chainplate on deck. It doesn't seam like a
bad
idea to me since my sails might need some work after the boat is in the
water.
The notion of removing them while the mast is up is one I like. Anyone see
a
problem?
